Story of Padman of Maharashtra
Pained by personal loss of a dear one due to poor menstrual hygiene and awareness, Swapnil started the journey of exploring the subject. He was shocked to know, how our girls and women hide their periods and are embarrassed to talk anything around periods even to the closest family members. This leads to poor female hygiene which most times end up damaging women’s body in form of several diseases.
He took up a mission to create awareness about the matter in his family, friends and close circles. Seeing the poor state of affairs, he enlarged the vision to larger society. He ensured that awareness programs are not gender specific & are attended by males too. This way he started the movement of removing menstrual taboo.
He found out in this journey that many women who are lucky enough to afford pads are actually playing with their health, as most pads contain plastics, harmful chemicals such as Dioxin, SAP etc, which reacts with period blood and causes PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and cervical cancer.
Thus, he decided to make a pad which is free from harmful chemicals. His immense effort & support of StepUp team has led us to create StepUp sanitary napkins.
He has conducted 3500 workshops in schools, societies and companies throughout Maharashtra including interior villages. Almost 3.5 lakhs men and women have participated in these workshops. In this mission, he has been joined by his sister Yati, who is now known as “Yati Didi” by many.
Given his efforts, He received recognition as ‘Padman of Maharashtra’ by many institution & NGOs. He has been facilitated in Pune on “Rashtrabandhu Rajeevbhai Dixit Inspiration Day”.
